It's Showtime For The Greenans And Thermomax

Earlier this year, Aidan and Martina Greenan entered the Kingspan Energy competition via its online site www.kingspanenergy.com, which was offering one reader the opportunity to improve their home’s energy rating by winning €20,000 worth of Kingspan Insulation and Solar products.
The couple lived in a cold, draughty bungalow which was built 40 years ago. Martina suffers from a debilitating illness, fibromyalgia, and also asthma which is not helped by dampness, humidity and poor ventilation in their home. By winning the competition the couple were given the chance to completely transform the comfort of their home by giving it the energy upgrade that it really needed.
Some of the world’s leading eco-technologies were integrated into the house, one of which was Kingspan Renewables’ awarding-winning Thermomax solar thermal vacuum tubes. Thermomax collectors are perfectly placed to meet today’s Part L requirements, paramount to all BER assessments, supplying up to 70% of users’ annual hot water needs, making it the perfect piece of solar technology for the Greenans. The Thermomax Vacuum Tube collectors can be used to provide the mandatory Renewable input of 10 kWh/m2/annum by contributing to domestic hot water heating or assisting with the space heating of the home.
The system ensures the most effective transfer of solar energy into heat, being 30% more effective than flat plate collectors. The Thermomax solar thermal tube collectors are designed and manufactured for the Irish weather and still perform well on overcast days when flat panels actually radiate heat and lose energy. The Greenan’s home was BER assessed at the start of the project which resulted in a G rating. Following the successful upgrade, the house now boasts at fantastic C2 rating. Not only, does this provide the much need comfort that the Grennans wanted but it also increased the property’s value and “sell-ability”.
The whole project and installation of the Thermomax system was overseen by Kingspan Solar Accredited Installers and RTE1’s eco expert Duncan Stewart, who was documenting the whole process for the hugely popular ‘About the House’ programme.
